Earning positive customer ratings and reviews can help with app-store optimization as part of an overall organic acquisition marketing strategy. Higher ratings and a higher volume of reviews can benefit your company in two ways: First, your app will show up higher in app-store rankings; second, these ratings and reviews can help convert potential customers viewing your app into actual customers who have downloaded your app.
The best practice says that we should ask for a review only from our loyal customers and at the moment when they are most likely to give us a positive review.
In this case, we will only ask our loyal customers who made more than 10 purchases in the last 20 days or have used coupons/promotions at the cash register more than 10 times in the last 20 days. We will ask them for feedback 3 seconds after they made a purchase or 5 minutes after using the coupon/promotion so we can use positive user emotion to drive the ratings.
First, we need to create the segmentation:
- In the left sidebar select Segments in Engagement section
- In the upright corner, select Create Segment button and add the name to your segment. In this case, we will call it Loyal users
Loyal Users Segment for the App That Only Supports Ordering
- In the Filter section click Select Filter button
- Choose X Custom Event In Y Days
- Then choose Has made more than 10 purchases in the last 20
- Tap Save to create the segment
Loyal Users Segment for the App That Only Supports Coupons/Promotions
- In the Filter section click on the Select Filter... and choose X Custom Event In Y Days
- In Search custom event search for Confirm Cash Register Coupon and select it
- Then choose more than 10 times in the last 20 calendar days
If your app supports Promotions also than we need to add one more filter:
- Click on the OR button
- Click Select Filter again
- Choose X Custom Event In Y Days
- Search for Confirm Cash Register Promotion and select it
- Then choose more than 10 times in the last 20 calendar days
- Click Save to create the segment
We can now proceed with creating the Campaign.
Step 1 - Compose
- In the left sidebar select Campaigns in Engagement section
- Select Create Campaign and In-App Messaging
- Add name and description to your campaign
- For Message Type choose Modal and for Layout choose Text (with Optional Image)
Now we should compose the message to ask our users to give us a rating on the App or Play store. We should use personalization to make it more effective. Let’s say that the message header should look like this: Hey Michael 👋
- In Header input field type in Hey
- Click on the plus icon
- In Add Personalization layover for Personalization Type choose Default Attributes
- For Attribute choose first_name as in the screenshot below
- Click Insert Personalization button will add a placeholder into the header
- In Body input field you can enter message such as: If you enjoy using the Kauwela Poké app would you mind taking a moment to rate it?
- In Button 1 Text enter: Not now
- In Button 2 Text enter: Yes, I would like to
- In On Click Behavior section for Button 1 choose Close Message for both platforms
- For Button 2 for Android choose Redirect to Web URL and add a link to Play Store in the input field below
- For Button 2 for iOS choose Deep Link Into App and add a link [app-scheme]://rate where [app-scheme] is your URL Scheme.
- Create your Deeplink by replacing [app-scheme] with your app's URL scheme. It should end up looking something like this: kauwelapoke.app://rate
NOTE: Please reach out to your Account Manager or open a ticket through one of our contact forms if you don't have your URL scheme yet. - For Message Close choose Wait for User Swipe or Touch
We highly recommend you to use the option to stylize your In-app message to be in line with your app and brand.
- Select the Style tab
Inside you can change the properties of text, buttons, and background. After making all the modifications, save the style for future use.
You can always test the message before sending it to real users.
- Select Test tab
- In Add Individual Users input field enter email you are using to log in to the app
- Click Send Test button
- After testing click Forward to progress to the next step
Step 2 - Delivery
- In Delivery step for New Trigger Action select Make Purchase
- Click Add Trigger button
- Choose after 3 seconds for Schedule Delay
- In Campaign Duration section choose the campaign start and end date
- In the Delivery Controls - Allow users to become re-eligible to receive campaign should be unselected as we don’t want to be pushy. That can harm our app ratings.
- Click Forward to progress to the next step
Step 3 - Target Users
For target users, we need to choose previously created segment of Loyal users as we will be targeting only those users.
- In Targeting Options section select Loyal users for Add Segment
- In A/B Testing section unselect Control Group
- Click Forward to progress to the next step
Step 4 - Conversions
As we don’t have the possibility to measure how many people opted to give the rating we will skip this step.
- Click Forward to progress to the final step
Step 5 - Confirm
In the final step, you will get an overview of the changes you’ve made in all the steps.
- Click Launch Campaign to start this campaign
After launching the campaign you can check its performance by going to the Campaigns then select the campaign name. You can always edit the campaign if you click the gear wheel icon and select Edit.
