Context
Cookies are an important tool that can give businesses a great deal of insight into their users’ online activity. Given the amount of data that cookies can contain, they can be considered personal data in certain circumstances and, therefore, subject to certain regulations that can be different from country to country.
The Cookie Handling Policy feature allows you to easily configure the handling of cookies settings on the Web App. It also allows you to be in compliance with the country-specific regulations the Brand operates in, while being able to collect customer data you need to focus on service excellence.
How can Cookies be configured?
Web App’s Cookie Handling is accessible to users given the ‘Cookie Handling’ permission in MC/Brand’s Configurations. Brand Managers have ‘Cookie Handling’ permission by default.
As per image below, you can figure out that there are three options for cookie handling that a Brand can choose from:
1. No Cookie Handling
This option is available if you want to use a 3rd party cookie handling solution (for example, OneTrust). If this option is set, the Web App itself will not show any cookie handling banner and all services that use cookies will be started on the homepage, so the 3rd party solution can be configured to block the ones that a customer did not provide his/her, consent for.
2. Simple Cookie Handling
This option is a default option (the known simple cookie banner) and it shows the banner informing the user that Website is using cookies, having an ‘OK’ button that the user needs to click on in order to accept all cookies.
3. GDPR Compliant Cookie Handling
This option provides more information about cookies used by the Web App including the name of the service that is creating cookies, an explanation regarding usage of the certain cookie, and its time extension. If you choose this option, you will be providing your customers with the possibility to manage their Cookie preferences meaning that customers can accept some categories of cookies while declining others ones.
How does this work?
Manage Cookies Modal opens when a customer clicks on the ‘Manage cookies’ button inside the banner or the link in the footer, which is always available (the customer can use it to change his preference at any time).
Cookies are categorized under the following 4 categories:
-
Strictly necessary - only cookie category that can’t be turned off
-
Functional
-
Performance & Analytics
-
Marketing
Please note that the category won’t be shown to the customer if no cookies belong to that specific category.
From the Manage Cookies modal, customers can click on the ‘View Details’ button to get information regarding cookies that belong to each Category.
GDPR Compliant Cookie Handling offers 2 additional configuration options:
-
Using the Fullscreen Banner (off by default)
-
Reject Button availability (on by default)
The fact is that there are no clear answers regarding some regulations like usage of Cookie walls and Reject button availability, and taking into consideration that regulation can vary from country to country, it is up to the Brands to decide if they go with the ´safe´ approach to be in compliance with regulations, while others will be open to go with the ´risky´approach to increase conversion and get more data from their users.
Fullscreen Banner will prevent the customer from interacting with the page until a choice is made regarding the cookie handling preferences.
The Reject Button allows customers to reject all cookie categories (except the Strictly necessary ones) at once which decreases conversion. The availability of this button is specifically required in some countries.
